Besançon, the 3rd September 2007 – The latest BMW X5 incorporates an ambient lighting
concept in front and rear door panels. The
longitudinal light guides placed in the door
storages highlight the car’s interior luxury,
materials and craftsmanship. It also allows a
better seek of elements stored in the door:
pens, maps, wallet, flashlight…
Benefiting from the lighting advantages of LED,
this feature relies on the use of one optical light
pipes to distribute the light. The purpose of a
light pipe is to distribute light from one entry
point to one or several exit point(s). This is
ruled by the total internal reflection (TIR)
principle. Technical advantage of this concept is
the homogeneous light and colour rendering, as
well as extended lifetime and no light
replacement requirement.
Benefits of such ambient lighting features comes
into flavour mainly during night driving, when
weather is dark, or when outside areas are
obscure. Inside volumes seem to be enlarged,
and feelings of comfort and security embrace
car drivers and passengers.
Ambient lighting finds once again its place inside
car maker’s strategy…
