A rotary switch operates by rotation which controls different circuit functions. The rotor has a contact arm or spoke that projects from its surface like a cam. An array of terminals is arranged in a circle around the rotor. Each terminal serves as a contact for the arm/spoke. This allows electrical circuits to be connected to the rotor. The switch is layered to allow the use of multiple poles. Each layer is equivalent to one pole.
